The Charleston Gazette: At War with a Circus

leave a comment »

Funny editorial in the Charleston Gazette today.  Funny, not so much in the “ha-ha” way, but in the “huh?” sort of way.

Not known for their promotion of the socially conservative…well…anything, the Gazette once again takes to task Carrie Prejean and the world of “fundamentalist” Christians.

Sidebar: One has to wonder whether the Gazette can actually define “fundamentalist Christian.”  In this episode, the editors seem to include everything from beauty queens and Catholics into that framework – which is hardly an orthodox definition of the term.

Regardless, here is the opening and closing line of the editorial:

Sometimes, America’s culture war turns into a circus. Events in April became downright goofy.

. . .

Good grief. Amid America’s serious troubles, the culture war can seem like a carnival sideshow.

In between, the Gazette lampoons anyone who might dare to stand for the definition of marriage as one man and one woman.  But, if the “culture war” is not as troublesome as “America’s serious troubles,” and instead merely “a carnival sideshow,” than what’s the problem?

Something tells me that ink would not be spilled on “sideshow” issues, unless the sideshow were nearing the center ring and the ringmaster were in danger of losing his hat.

If you care to read the rest, the editorial can be found here.
